Brazil’s foreign trade retracted above the world average in 2020

The covid-19 pandemic has impacted Brazil’s trade with other countries above the world average. Last year, the trade flow (sum of imports and exports) fell 8.2%, according to a survey by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), based on recent figures from the World Trade Organization (WTO). The variation exceeds the shrinkage of 7.6% in world trade in 2020.

Germany wants Brazil as a partner for importing green hydrogen

In the search to meet the future domestic demand for energy based on renewable and low carbon energies, Germany is looking for partners in the world to import green hydrogen and considers that Brazil can be a major exporter of the energy source. Data from the Hydrogen Council indicate that the production and export of hydrogen will account for 20% of the entire global energy demand in 2050, generating a market worth $ 2.5 tn. As Brazil has about 80% of its electricity matrix renewable, it can become a major player in this market.

Energy consumption in Brazil advances 10.5%

Electricity consumption in Brazil advanced 10.5% in the first half of May compared to the same period of the previous year, boosted especially by the free environment, informed the Chamber of Commercialization of Electrical Energy (CCEE). According to the entity, the consumption in the National Interconnected System (SIN) reached 61,418 average megawatts in the period.

Agrogalaxy is the first Brazilian agribusiness company to have Women on Board certification

Agrogalaxy has become the first Brazilian agribusiness company to be certified with the Women on Board (WOB) certification. The award is given to companies that have at least two female directors on their Board of Directors or Advisory Board. Women On Board is an independent initiative, supported by UN Women, which recognizes, values and disseminates the existence of corporate environments with the presence of women in management or advisory boards with the aim of demonstrating the benefits of diversity to business and society.

Votorantim and CPPIB will invest $36 mm in Brazil’s first hybrid park

VTRM, a joint venture between Votorantim Energia and CPP Investments, will invest R$189.98 million ($36 mm) in Brazil’s first hybrid park, located in Piauí. The initiative’s pilot project was approved by Aneel, when the agency also approved the second phase of the public hearing on the topic. A 68.7 MW solar plant will be installed inside the Ventos do Piauí I wind farm; the project aims to combine energy sources and take advantage of different hourly production profiles.

CPFL invests $865k in robot that inspects UHEs tunnels

CPFL Energia, in partnership with Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA) and Fundação Casimiro Montenegro Filho (FCMF), has developed an underwater robot to inspect hydropower tunnels. The project has investments of R$ 4.5 million ($865k) and aims to provide more security to the operations of checking the structural integrity of inaccessible sites, ensuring the proper functioning of the plants.

Ipea revises projection for official inflation from 4.6% to 5.3% in 2021

The Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea) has revised its forecast for IPCA (Amplified Consumer Price Index) inflation in 2021, increasing from 4.6% to 5.3%. The index is calculated by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) and used as a reference for the inflation target system pursued by the Central Bank.
