I-REC certifies the first biogas plant in Brazil

I-REC Standard has registered its first biogas plant in Brazil, UTE Biogás Bonfim. The enterprise has 21 MW of installed capacity and is located in Guariba, in São Paulo. Altogether, the I-REC system has already certified 200 plants with renewable consumption in the country. Among the certified projects are wind, hydro, solar, biomass and now a biogas power plant. In Brazil, the certification is issued by Instituto Totum, which grants permission to issue and transfer I-RECs.

Report shows that 94% of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is illegal

An unprecedented study developed by Brazilian researchers indicates that 94% of deforestation in the Amazon and the surrounding Matopiba region, which encompasses part of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia, is illegal. Since Bolsonaro took office in 2019, deforestation in the world’s largest rainforest has been on the rise. In the 12 months to August 2020, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon increased by 9.5%.
