The “social profit” generated by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) reached R$61.85 billion ($11 bn) in 2020. The value was calculated based on the analysis of the economic impact of 152 technological solutions and about 220 cultivars developed by its researchers. The net revenue of the state-owned company, linked to the Ministry of Agriculture, was almost R$3.5 billion ($625 mm) last year.

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the financial system and caused a 26% drop in banks’ profits in 2020 compared to the previous year, according to a BC report. Banks will pocket R$88.6 bn ($15.8 bn) in 2020, against R$119.7 bn ($21.3 bn) in 2019, a difference of $31.1 bn ($5.5 bn). According to the Central Bank, although there are still uncertainties about the evolution of the pandemic, the trend is for banks’ profits to grow in 2021.
BYD has started producing 400Wp monocrystalline modules at its factory in Campinas (SP). The company reported that the new photovoltaic cells have 22.6% efficiency, making it possible to produce the 400Wp modules without changing module size. The benefit for the end customer is a more efficient product, which generates more energy, containing the same size and dimensions compared to similar imported products sold in Brazil.

Adopted by the plants of RenovaBio, the federal government’s biofuels program, RenovaCalc has presented expressive results, consolidating the carbon market in Brazil by 2020. The amount of business with this type of security last year alone exceeded 14 million CBios traded, generating an additional revenue of almost R$ 700 million ($127 mm) in the biofuel chain in Brazil, according to Embrapa.

The board of the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) approved at a meeting on Tuesday the opening of a public consultation process to discuss the rules of an auction of concessions for new energy transmission projects scheduled for 17 December. The contest will offer investors five lots of projects, which together should demand total investments of around R$2 billion ($357 mm).
